Volunteer Spotlight - Jillian Thorpe
We recently asked some of our regular volunteers to tell us something about themselves, some of their interests, their hobbies, and the like, so that we could share them with you.
Today we feature Jillian Thorpe who has volunteered for us on our reception ever since we opened our doors in 2010. Here is what we asked her:
- How did you become a volunteer and why?
I had just retired when the Lighthouse opened at Warwick Mill and was looking for somewhere to help in the community. - What is your favourite place in Middleton?
Costa Coffee in Middleton Shopping Centre because I love meeting people there for an encouraging chat! - Ideally how would you spend every day?
Walking, gardening, reading, meeting friends and family – sometimes watching true life story films. - What was the best holiday you have been on?
The Maldives. - If money was no object, what would you do?
Travel around the world, meet people and organisations that are aiming to uncover injustice and suffering, and help by giving money. - What one piece of advice would you give?
Be slow to judge, be a good listener, think before you speak, continually seek wise advice, and don’t take yourself too seriously! - What or who is your biggest inspiration?
Knowing my life was planned and purposed, even before I was born – and my goal is always to follow that plan through every season. - Who would you like to invite for dinner?

Are you interested in volunteering?
All of our projects make use of volunteers who freely give their time and experience to our work. This can be done one or more times a week, for whole, or part days, to suit your availability.
Volunteering is a great way to support others. We are always open to extend the range of skills that we can share with people through our volunteers, in turn this develops and expands our project capacity.
Your skills and experience might be just what we need. You could help us offer something that is missing from one of our existing projects, or you might be able to develop your own skills and interests through some of the activities that we run.
In fact our whole vision is about inspiring and encouraging people to do positive things and our work requires more and more people to participate. So, if that’s you then come and contact us, we’ll find you something to do.
