The recent launch of the Lighthouse Project walking group ‘Best Foot Forwards’ has been a great success. Come along every Friday 12-1:30pm

bootsFrom the first walk arranged around Boarshaw and Mills Hill, via the canal, the group has become a weekly favourite for the growing number of local people who are attending.

The aim of the group is to provide accessible local walks that are interesting as well as fun to do, the walking helps people to improve their health in a gentle way.

The walks are simple to do even for young children parents with buggies, and the elderly – they are more of a gentle stroll than a full on ramble.

Each walk is prepared in advance and trained volunteers make sure no-one gets lost or left behind. You can take things at your own pace, starting slowly and building up gently. It’s wonderfully social too – you can spend quality time with family and friends, and even make some new ones too. There is also the option to stay for lunch after the walk when the group returns to the Lighthouse.

“I had a great time and it was good company,” said Hannah commenting at the end of the first walk.

The group is led by Margaret one of our volunteers and they meet every Friday at 12 noon at the Lighthouse Project on Hilton Fold Lane before setting off. If the weather proves too bad there is always the option of doing an indoor walk around the Lighthouse warehouse to keep dry!

Lighthouse engagement worker Carole says “This is a great opportunity for people to enjoy some friendly company, and to explore the local area whilst improving their health as well. Everyone is welcome no matter what your age or ability, this is an activity that everyone can enjoy and get something out of.”

We are running the walking group in conjunction with Big Life Groups Living Well team from Rochdale and it is part of the national Walking for Health scheme run by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support – walkingforhealth.org.uk
